Summer Reading Lists

All students have summer reading assignments that are due upon their return in August. You can view your summer reading lists. Be sure to check under the grade you will be in August!

The summer reading lists are by the class that you are going into!: (click on a grade below)

Elementary

First Grade

This is a suggested list. Each child is on a different reading level. Feel free to adjust this according to your child’s reading ability. Most importantly, read to your children and if they are readers, have them read aloud to you. This will greatly improve their reading fluency.

The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco

Second Grade

The following is a list of suggested reading. Please follow the guidelines specified below when helping your child choose books to read. Remember that the more interested they are in the subject, the more they will read, so let your child choose his/her books.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day - by Judith Viorst

Amazing Grace - by Mary Hoffman

Ameila Bedelia - by Peggy Parish

Beezus and Ramona - by Beverly Cleary

The Bracelet - by Yoshiko Uchida

Ramona the Pest - by Beverly Cleary

Stellaluna - by Janell Cannon

Sylvester and the Magic Pebble - by William Steig

I recommend the “five finger” rule when choosing a book to read. Students should read the first page of the book (or about 100 words), and for each word they don’t know, put up one finger. At the end of the page, if they have five fingers up, then the book is too hard. If no fingers are up, the book is too easy. The goal is to have two or three fingers up. By using this method students can independently choose an appropriate book.

I strongly encourage students to join the local libraries’ summer reading programs in El Dorado Hills, Folsom, and Cameron Park. Students can win prizes for reading a set amount. If your child does not already have his/her own library card, please help him/her apply for one and encourage him/her to be responsible for returning the books on time. I would also like to refer you to a website that you can explore with your child: www.teachersandfamilies.com (click on Best Books under K-12, then click Primary – Grades K-3).

Book Poster Assignment: Students should pick one book to share with the class. They should make a 12 by 18 inch poster with an illustration of their favorite part of the book. The poster should include the title and the author. It is due the first day of school.

Third Grade

Your child will be required to read two books this summer as graded assignments when he/she returns to school for the third grade.

Assignment 1

  1. Read: The Boxcar Children #1 by Gertrude Chandler Warner

  2. Be prepared to take a comprehension test the first week of school.

Assignment 2

  1. Select and read another book for a book report. The book may be from the list below which varies in difficulty and interests. Your child is also welcome to select a different book as long as it hasn’t been read before and it is at your child’s independent reading level.

§ Abbot, Tony The Secret of Droon Series

§ Baglio, Ben M. Animal Ark Series

§ Baker, Barbara The William Problem

§ Banks, Lynne Reid The Indian in the Cupboard

§ Cleary, Beverly Ribsy, Ramona, The Mouse & the Motorcycle

§ Christopher, Matt Cool as Ice (sports series)

§ Dahl, Roald The BFG, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

    § Howe, Deborah Bunicula

§ McMullan, Kate Dragon Slayer’s Academy

    § Naylor, Phyllis Reynolds Shiloh

§ Osborne, Mary Pope Magic Tree House Series

§ Sachar, Louis Sideways Stories from Wayside School

§ Sobol, Donald Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective Series

§ Stewart, Jennifer If That Breathes Fire, We’re Toast!

§ Wilder, Laura Ingalls Little House in the Big Woods

  2. The book report should be on a 12 x 18 inch poster that is labeled with your child’s name in the lower right hand corner. The following elements should be included:

    - Title and Author (clearly visible)

    - Setting (where, when)

    - Characters (who)

    - Problem (the main problem)

    - Solution (how the problem is solved)

    - Recommendation ( would you recommend that others read this book, why or why not)

Fourth Grade

Your child will be required to read two books this summer as graded assignments when he/she returns to school for the Fourth Grade.

Assignment 1: Please have your child read Frindle by Andrew Clements. When we return to school in August, he/she will participate in class discussions and activities relating to Frindle during the first two weeks of school. Please have your child bring in his/her book the first day of school.

Assignment 2: Have your child select another book for a book report. The book report should be a poster and include the following:

  1.  Author and Title prominently displayed and all the following in complete sentences, punctuated and spelled correctly:

  2.  A description of the main character(s)

  3. A description of the setting

  4. The problem

  5. The solution

  6. Your child’s recommendation

Of course, the poster should be colorful, well written, easy to read, and your child’s best work. Your child may use the computer for this assignment. (Please use black ink on white paper for printed work. It is much easier to read.) The poster is due the first day of school. They will be displayed on the wall outside the classroom on the first day back. Please do not have your child make his/her poster on foam board or cardboard because I cannot put it up on the wall outside the classroom.

Below is a list of suggestions for books for the poster:

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis

Abel's Island by William Steig

Bunnicula by James Howe

The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes

Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks

Little House Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl

The above selections are just suggestions for the poster; they vary in difficulty and span a variety of interests. Your child will be more successful if he/she is allowed to select the book of greatest interest to him/her for the poster. A wonderful way to do this is to plan a trip to the library (the new El Dorado Hills Library would be fun!) or the bookstore to allow your child options. At the same time, you can find some books of interest yourself and model the power of reading!

Happy Reading,

Ms. King
